Hokkaido– 開拓と先住民の文化が交差する最北の地 –
北海道は、本州とは異なる独自の歴史を刻んできました。数万年前からアイヌ民族が生活し、豊かな自然資源に恵まれた土地でしたが、江戸時代には松前藩が蝦夷地を支配していました。1869年の箱館戦争を経て明治政府の領土となり、「開拓」という国家プロジェクトのもと、急速な近代化が進められました。
開拓は、人々の生活様式や文化に大きな変化をもたらし、アイヌ民族との関係にも影を落としました。しかし、その過程で北海道は農業、漁業、林業など様々な産業が発展し、今日の経済基盤を築き上げました。
観光地としては、札幌の時計台や大通公園といった開拓時代の面影を残すスポットに加え、アイヌ文化に触れることができる博物館やコタン(集落)がおすすめです。富良野・美瑛のラベンダー畑や雄大な自然を満喫できる知床半島、阿寒湖など、美しい景観も北海道の魅力の一つです。近年では、小樽運河のロマンチックな風景や函館の夜景も国内外から多くの観光客を集めています。
